Along Villajoyosa's seafront, rows of old fishermen's houses are painted in bands of cobalt, ochre, coral and deep green, no two neighbors quite the same. The explanation locals give is a practical one: a fisherman rowing home through the Mediterranean haze needed to pick out his own house from far offshore, and a wall of uniform whitewash would never manage it. So the town turned itself into a paintbox. La Vila Joiosa — 'the Joyful Town' in Valencian — earns the name before you have even stepped ashore.
