Miquel Capllonch Rotger was born on the northern shoulder of Mallorca in January 1861, into a Balearic world of fishing boats and stone terraces that rarely sent its children to the palaces of Europe. He would leave for Madrid, then Berlin, and come back with the bearing of a man who had played for kings. Yet the plaza that remembers him is not grand. It is an ordinary seaside square where children chase gulls and old men debate the wind, which is precisely the kind of homecoming his music kept reaching for.
