Climb the shaded northern flank of the Serra del Menejador on a blazing August afternoon, and the thermometer falls with every switchback. Down on the plains around Alcoy the light hammers white off bare rock, and the cicadas roar. Up here, beneath a dense canopy of holm oak, the air turns cool, green, and faintly damp. This is the Font Roja, the "red spring" that gives the mountain its name, and it is one of the best-preserved natural areas in the whole Valencian Community, a pocket of old Mediterranean woodland that the axe and the grazing goat somehow never finished off.]]></description>
