In January 1999, eleven thousand people marched through the streets of Ibiza town to save a beach most of them did not live on. It was an extraordinary turnout — roughly one in seven people on the entire island — and it was aimed at a stretch of quiet western shore called Cala d'Hort, where developers had drawn up plans for a 420-room hotel, an 18-hole golf course and a desalination plant to water it all. The islanders called what followed the Battle of Cala d'Hort. They won.
